In the late 1930’s, the streamlining craze in industrial design influenced the production boat designs. Chris Craft came out with it’s Custom Runabouts with a streamlined look. These became known as "Barrelback’s" and had a stern that was wider at the waterline than at the deck level. This formed almost a perfect semicircle transom on the boat. This style was produced from 1939-1942 by Chris Craft. During that time, 391 were built. The Custom Runabout featured folding V-windshields and the wood was varnished over the Chris Craft red mahogany stained sides. The decks contrasted with walnut-stained covering boards and king plank.
